Why not start your trip at Love's
Welcome to The Clarion River! Recently earning the "Wild and Scenic" status, this river flows through beautiful forested valleys located on the southern border of Allegheny National Forest.

While canoeing through all or part of the 61 mile stretch from Ridgway to Clarion you will find nature and beauty at its finest. You are cutting through some of the state's finest deer country and will often come across a few whitetails drinking from the stream or does with their fawns during the spring time. Raccoons, waterfowl and even an occasional black bear are not all that uncommon either. Come join us for canoeing the Clarion

You'll find primitive campsites abound and that flat shelves for dry, level tent locations are parallel to the river at the base of the wooded hills, which engulf much of this stretch. The huge rocks all around will make an excellent picnic stop.

How a river earns "Wild and Scenic" status!
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was passed by Congress in 1968. The goal is "to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural or recreational features in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations".

Minimum requirements for eligibility include, firstly, that a river be free-flowing. Simply, there can't be any impoundments on the river stretches that are under consideration. The second requirement is that at least one "outstanding" value be identified. This value includes recreational, historical, scenic, cultural, ecological, in nature.
