The Clarion-Little Toby Trail is an 18 mile trail located in the Elk and Jefferson Counties that expands between the towns of Ridgway and Brockway Pennsylvania. The trail is open to the public for hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing or other non-motorized use.
The trail follows the abandoned Ridgway and Clearfield branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad alongside the Clarion River from Ridgway to the ghost town of Carman, then from Carman to Brockway alongside the Little Toby Creek.
HISTORY:
The Ridgway-Clearfield branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad was built in 1885 and the last train ran on November 2, 1968. The tracks were removed in 1972. From Ridgway, the trains traveled through Carman, Croyland, Blue Rock, Carrier, Brockwayville (now Brockway), Lanes Mills and McMinn's Summit to Falls Creek.
CURRENT STATUS - FEBRUARY 1998:
The current project encompasses the portion of the Ridgway-Clearfield branch from Ridgway to Brockway. Approximately 4.2 miles of the trail have been completed on the Ridgway end of the trail and 4.3 miles on the Brockway end of the trail. The remaining 9.8 miles have been graded and drained. Completion of another 1.6 miles is scheduled for May 1998. The trail traverses a great deal of PA Game Commission land and the entire distance can be traveled without crossing a highway.
FUTURE PLANS:
Completion of the 9.8 mile center portion of the trail depends on availability of funds. Approximately one-half of the abandoned right-of-way from Brockway to Falls Creek has been acquired and may be an extension of the developed trail in the future. There is also a study underway on the feasibility of extending the trail from Brockway to Brookville along abandoned track (approximately 17 miles).
