An Initiative to Identify Potential Hosts for Public EV Charging Stations

GOALS
The North Central Regional Planning and Development Commission (North Central), collaborating with PennDOT, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and local partners like Clean Cities, aims to expand our regional EV charging network. By identifying potential EV charging sites across our counties, we support the growing number of EVs that visit our region for tourism and foster EV adoption in our rural areas.

UNDERSTANDING CHARGING OPTIONS
There are different charging options available for EVs. For businesses where vehicles park longer, Level 2 chargers are suitable, requiring less power. Fast charging, though more costly, plays a vital role along high-traffic routes, offering quick charging solutions.

WHAT CHARGING OPTIONS MAKE SENSE FOR MY LOCATION?
When considering locations for public Level 2 or fast chargers, it’s crucial to focus on areas that ensure convenience and accessibility for a wide range of users. Level 2 chargers are well-suited for locations like shopping centers and workplaces, where cars are parked for several hours. In contrast, fast chargers are ideal for restaurants, convenience stores, and truck stops, providing quick top-ups for travelers or commuters on the go.

HOW CAN WE HELP?
We will help interested hosts find technical support and resources to evaluate site-specific charging options, infrastructure costs, and implementation steps, paving the way for potential funding opportunities.

AVAILABLE FUNDING
There are various funding sources available, including the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula program, managed by PennDOT, and other state and national grants. and other state and national grants. North Central also administers funding through programs like the Carbon Reduction Program (CRP). Depending on the funding source, a match may be required as part of the grant application.
